Wallsunk FC
Formed in 1898 as Wallsunk Swankers after an amalgamation of prison team Wallsunk Swindlers and Wallsunk Anchors, an ill fated Sea Scout team which was famous for being situated 52 miles from any sea.
The nickname The Swindlers has continued to this day, especially after an FA Cup tie in 1931 where Wallsunk, aided by a team of bent signwriters and bogus policemen managed to hoodwink the FA, Aston Volley FC and 87,000 fans that their away game at Aston Volleys ground was actually a home tie at Oddfellows Park.
The Swindlers have performed well (considering) in the cup competitions, but have yo-yoed around the lower divisions and flirted with administration on several occasions. 1986 saw the club saved by fried fish magnate Harry Ramsbottom, but a collapse of the lard market led to financial problems and the club was saved by local businessmen, led by Barry Bigbollogs.
The club moved to the new Bunker Stadium in 1990, only the second new ground in the Football League since The Magnificent Roots Hall Mega Stadium opened in 1955.
The second tier was reached in 2000 when the Football League’s millennium computer glitched and swapped Wallsunk for Wolverhampton. Thankfully relegation followed before the Swindlers were sanctioned.
The Swindlers reached the 2015 Wembley final of the Jugs and Pints Trophy, where they were promptly stuffed by Bristol Breast Joke FC.
Relegation from League One was achieved in 2019 after a ding-dong battle with the Mighty Shrimpers but 2023-24 sees The Swindlers hoping to return pronto, after a takeover by American Firm TriAgain PLC who thought they were buying Wrexham.
