The pair were joined on the scoresheet by youngsters Josh Onomah and Nathan Oduwa as we stepped up our pre-season programme by taking on the League One new boys at Hotspur Way.

A number of first team players got game time under their belts in the match, with defenders Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier handed their first run-outs since arriving at the Club earlier this summer.

Andros Townsend and Roberto Soldado both went close from a similar position in the right channel in the opening stages before we took a 19th minute lead when Oduwa invaded the area on the left side and slid the ball across the six-yard box for Onomah to fire home.

Goalkeeper Michel Vorm denied David Worrall at the other end and then made himself big to block Anthony Wordsworth’s effort at the edge of the box before we doubled our lead just after the half-hour mark. Oduwa cleverly flicked the ball out to Rose on the left side, who drove towards the corner of the box before firing low inside the far post.

It was 3-0 within 60 seconds as Bentaleb picked up possession in central midfield and lashed a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net from 30 yards out, although the last chance of the first half went to the Shrimpers just before the break as first Worrall hit the crossbar and then Vorm tipped over the top from the follow-up.

Both sides made wholesale changes at the interval with the goal of getting match minutes for as many players as possible at this early stage of the summer – but it didn’t take us long to find our stride once again as Townsend crossed for Oduwa to tap home number four in the 50th minute.

Townsend then played substitute Shaq Coulthirst in behind Southend’s defence twice in quick succession – the striker first being denied by the goalkeeper, with his second effort spinning wide off a defender.

A left-footed curler from Townsend rebounded off the far post on the hour mark, before substitute goalkeeper Luke McGee tipped a dipping header over the bar at the other end in the closing stages.
